Kensington Palace are confused about what mainstream newspapers are writing and what is happening on the internet, according to a former newspaper editor.

A statement released by Kensington Palace this morning claims Prince Harry's girlfriend Meghan Markle has been subjected to a "wave of abuse & harassment" from the media.

Former newspaper editor and media commentator Paul Connew told Julia Hartley-Brewer that the statement is "extraordinary" but also "somewhat baffling."

He believes “the Palace are getting a little confused" between what "mainstream newspapers are writing and what is happening on the wild west of cyberspace on Twitter" or "people reacting on newspaper’s own websites."

Connew also thinks the alleged harassing of Markle's mother "is probably down to North American or other foreign paparazzi."
