'Prince William going full-time? The Royals do nothing!' says Republic campaigner

'We need a real head of state who can take charge in a political crash', says campaign group Republic

Prince William is set to take on full time royal duties

A campaigner who wants to abolish the monarchy has scoffed at the idea of Prince William "becoming a full-time Royal."

Earlier it was reported that William would give up his career as an Air Ambulance pilot in the summer to concentrate exclusively on his royal duties, with the Queen taking a step back.

However Graham Smith, the chief executive of Republic, told Julia Hartley-Brewer that the idea is a nonsense, saying "there's no such thing as a hard-working royal."

In fact, Smith said, the only real work that goes into the Royal Family is done by the spin doctors trying to prove they actually work for a living.

Smith also told Julia that tourists don't come here because we have a royal family, contrary to the view of many monarchists, and suggested the Queen is just a "decoration."

Instead of the current Sovereign, Smith said, we need a head of state who can "hold the reins" if there is a "political crash."
