A pro-marijuana group plans to give out free joints to attendees of Donald Trump's inauguration.

The D.C. Cannabis Coalition told WUSA News that they will march from Dupont Circle to the National Mall, calling for the legalisation of marijuana.

The founder of the coalition, Adam Eidinger, said: “The main message is it’s time to legalize cannabis at the federal level.

"We don't want any money exchanged, whatsoever. This is really a gift for people who come to Washington, D.C."

They plan to give out 4,200 joints for free and will ask people to light them 4 minutes and 20 seconds into Trump's inauguration speech on January 20.

The reason for the timing is that 420 has become popular shorthand for marijuana, The Hill reports. Some say this derives from the police code for marijuana, others say it started out as local slang before going global.

Although it is legal in Washington to distribute the drug, it would be illegal to smoke it at the inauguration.
