Protests have broken out in the Kupwara District of Jammu and Kashmir as officials confirmed a man killed in a gunfight was not a militant, but a civilian.

The man was allegedly killed during a gunfight between security forces and militants. This  angered many yesterday (August 23) in the town of Handwara.

The Indian Army had originally claimed it killed a militant on Tuesday (August 22) in the gunfight.

The civilian was named as Shahid Bashir Mir and was 21-years-old. Reports claim he attended Handwara’s Government Degree College.

Police also said the man had been missing since August 21, according to The Hindustan Times.

But sources who claim to know the man's family say that due to him going missing beforehand, they believe this killing was staged.

The family identified the body on Wednesday (August 23) and has said Mir had no links with militants.
