Prue Leith is ideal replacement for Mary Berry, but the BBC will still beat the new Bake Off - TV critic

GBBO: 'Prue Leith is the perfect replacement for Mary Berry, but viewers will still hate the change', says TV critic

Prue Leith could be replacing Mary Berry

Prue Leith is the perfect replacement for Mary Berry on Bake Off, but viewers will still hate the change, says a popular TV critic.

Reports claim that Leith will replace Berry in the Channel 4 version of The Great British Bake Off, which is set to air later this year.

Kevin O'Sullivan told Julia Hartley-Brewer that Leith "really knows her stuff - if anything her pedigree is even better than Mary’s."

However, the TV critic warns that British television viewers "hate change of any type whatsoever" and whatever Channel 4 do "people will say 'it’s not as good as the old one'."

O'Sullivan believes the new series of GBBO will face three specific problems: The show will feel different because "of the lack of Mel and Sue"; viewers will be opposed to advert breaks; and "the BBC will have its rival all set up" when Bake Off airs, and they'll "probably put it head to head."

He added: "I fear the BBC will win that one."
