The Queen will miss the traditional Christmas church service this morning due to a heavy cold, Buckingham Palace has revealed.

The British monarch routinely attends a service near her Sandringham estate in rural Norfolk, and the event has become a central part of her festive calendar.

However the Queen and husband Prince Philip have been suffering from a cold for several days, and were even forced to delay their journey to Sandringham because of the illness.

The palace has not revealed any further details of the health of the Queen, who is 90, or her husband, who is 95.

However fans of the royal family shouldn't worry: the Queen's Christmas message, which is pre-recorded, will be broadcast live at 3pm as scheduled.
