The ice bucket challenge took the internet by storm back in 2014, as hundreds of thousands of people around the world poured pails of ice-cold water over themselves in videos uploaded to social media.

Those taking part then nominated others to do the same, all the while urging viewers to donate funds to the ALS Association, a US charity dedicated to research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Celebrities from Anna Wintour, Justin Bieber and Tom Cruise, to Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake and Mark Zuckerberg all took part in the craze, which swept the world.

This week it has been revealed that, as well as thousands of hilarious videos, the ice bucket challenge raised more than $100m (£76m) in a 30-day period which was able to fund a range a number of research projects.

One of these, Project MinE, discovered a new gene which can be targetted in the development of therapy for types of motor neurone diseases.

After this huge breakthrough, we decided to celebrate some of the weird and wonderful ways people have raised money for charity.
