The result of the Richmond Park by-election is an expression of disquiet about Brexit rather than a reaction to the Heathrow runway decision, according to a London journalist.
Zac Goldsmith lost the by-election to the Liberal Democrats last night. Sarah Olney overturned a 23,000 majority, removing the former Conservative MP.
Guardian writer and author of Zac versus Sadiq, Dave Hill, told Julia Hartley-Brewer the election wasn't about the "Heathrow expansion in the end because there was no candidate who was in favour of Heathrow expansion."
Hill also believes that this year's ugly mayoral campaign "was a part of why Zac Goldsmith lost", but in the end "it became about Brexit."
Hill said the result is "an expression of a very sort of metropolitan disquiet about what’s happened since the EU referendum."
