The United States and Russia are to come together on a new space station project.

Nasa and the Roscosmos space agency will work together to build the Deep Space Gateway station, which will go into orbit around the Moon.

The head of Russia's space agency said in a statement the first modules are projected to be completed between 2024 and 2028.

Igor Komarov explained the first stage will centre around building the orbital area of the space station.

The overall aim of the station is to facilitate missions into the solar system and serve as an easy access point to return to Earth.

The Deep Space Gateway project is open for other nations with space industries like China, India or Brazil to join.
