A Russian fighter jet has crashed on takeoff from an airbase in Syria, killing all those onboard.

The incident is believed to have taken place earlier on Tuesday morning local time.

The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed the Su-24 military aircraft skidded off the runway at the Khmeimim Airbase while it was beginning a "combat task."

The two personnel on board failed to eject, and the ministry says a technical malfunction was the cause.

Russia has used the Khmeimim Airbase, alongside others, to launch up to 150 airstrikes on Islamic State every day over the last week.

Forces have been stationed at the base since September 2015.
