A convicted sex offender has admitted to sending racist threats towards university students online in 2015.

John Edgar Rust allegedly posted on both Reddit and 4chan saying any black people “left at Howard University after 10 tomorrow will be the first to go...after all, it’s not murder if they’re black.”

The 26-year-old also allegedly used the n-word and claimed he'd be seen as a hero "knowing I made the world better," according to The Washington Post.

The university in Virginia increased its security following online threats for two days and some lessons were also cancelled.

Both parents and students had complained that the university hadn't been locked down due to online posts.

When making the alleged threats the man had been banned from using the internet as he is a convicted sex offender. He was also on probation and court records show his 2012 sex offence involved a child.

The prosecution claimed the threats were posted using WiFi in a restaurant and both his laptop and phone were connected, allowing Rust to be identified as they are registered with his name.

Alleged drafts of his messages were discovered on Rust's computer.

His defence said Rust had mental health problems, although admitted this was not affecting how competent he was.

The man is due to be sentenced in July. Perpetrators can be handed sentences of up to five years for threats against schools.
