The Shadow Foreign Secretary has been criticised on Twitter for her appearance on Question Time, which ended in jeers from by the audience.
Emily Thornberry was asked by an audience member to provide examples of countries that have actually successfully benefitted from socialism.
But the MP could not name a single country and stalled for time by saying “I would suggest that actually, the Labour party is a social democratic party, pretty much from the centre of Europe.”
"If you look at European economic policies throughout, which are successful policies, where they invest in their infrastructure, where they invest in safety nets."
Presenter David Dimbleby stopped her and said she had failed in answering with a country, as the audience laughed, before Thornberry suggested Germany.
Several people on Twitter have mocked Thornberry for her answer, with some claiming she doesn't know what socialism is and one even saying believing in socialism is like a cult.
