A woman has been killed and one has been injured after a sinkhole which was filling with water opened up in a road in Texas.

Sheriff's deputy Dora Linda Nishihara was killed after the sinkhole swallowed two vehicles on Sunday night at around 7:30pm.

A man who was also injured in the incident was rescued by a member of the public and taken to hospital.

The hole covered the width of the road and was around 10 to 20 feet deep.

It is believed that the sinkhole appeared due to a ruptured sewer line, according to New York Daily News.

Nishihara's vehicle was upside down and nearly fully submerged in water when the emergency services arrived, the San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said.

Emergency services managed to recover the vehicles from the sinkhole on Monday.
