Shooting reported near congressional baseball practice in Virginia

Three people are believed to be injured in the incident

A shooting has reportedly taken place near a congressional baseball practice in the US state of Virginia.

Witnesses are claiming an unidentified man opened fire on the group of people, believed to be Republican congressmen, as they prepared for a charity baseball match.

Republican whip Steve Scalise is confirmed to have been shot, as well as two police officers.

Another congressman, Mo Brooks witnessed the shooting and told local media there had been at least 50 shots fired from a semi-automatic weapon.

Alexandria police say they are on the scene in the Del Ray neighbourhood of Alexandria.

The authorities claim the suspect is in custody, and fire officials claim there are varying degrees of injury.

The police are advising people to stay away from the area.
