Tory MEP Daniel Hannan has insisted the UK must bring back its traditional navy blue passport once the country leaves the European Union.

A debate has sprung up in the wake of June's vote on the UK's membership of the EU, and Hannan is adamant that the country return to the old-style passport.

"Symbols matter," he told Julia Hartley-Brewer. "The old passport will be emblematic of the fact we are a free people, living under our own rules.

"There are people who couldn't care less, and there are people who resented losing it [the old passport].

"We'll be returning to a distinctive-looking passport, just like every independent country in the world takes for granted."
