Sir Vince Cable has revealed his worst fear is leaving the EU without a deal.

Breakfast show host Julia Hartley-Brewer asked the Liberal Democrat leader if a no-deal Brexit was his "worst fear", after he suggested that "crashing out" was becoming increasingly likely.

"Yes, it is," he replied. "That is the worst outcome and I think most people including members of the cabinet and people in Parliament accept that it is a very great risk."

The politician appeared on the show in the wake of last night's second round of "indicative votes", in which MPs failed to find a majority for any of the four alternatives to Theresa May's Brexit deal.

"The clear conclusion from yesterday is some combination of a modified government deal with a customs union and a referendum - a people's vote - would command a majority," he added.

"Desperate and dangerous though it is, I think we may actually now be getting there."
