Nine people have been injured in Germany after a smoke bomb was set off at a Kurdish event, according to police.

Those affected were treated for breathing difficulties on Sunday (August 20) in Berlin, Bangkok Post reported.

There were 400 people at the event, which pertained to the Kurdish region in Iraq, is a semi-autonomous territory, and its forthcoming independence referendum.

The government in Turkey has already announced that it is against the vote and claims it could lead to a civil war.

The members of Turkey's Kurdish community, located in the south-east of the country, want independence themselves and this has led to a prolonged dispute with the government in Ankara.

Police say it is not yet clear who was responsible for the smoke bomb.
