Theresa May has been blasted for being “even more arrogant than Margaret Thatcher” after rejecting Nicola Sturgeon’s demand for a second Scottish independence referendum.

Mrs May has not ruled out the idea of a second referendum entirely, but said it will not happen in the near future, as “now is not the time” to decide the issue.

SNP MP Angus MacNeil told talkRADIO the Prime Minister had twisted Ms Sturgeons’ words, as Scotland’s separatists don’t want a referendum now – in fact the earliest they want to hold the ballot is October 2018, a full 18 months from now.

The MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar continued by suggesting Ms May’s declaration shows the superiority of the EU to the UK.

“The EU would never behave in this way to any member state,” MacNeil told us. “That is a crystal clear difference. It shows the freedom the EU has as opposed to the UK.

“What is Theresa May scared of? She’s obviously going to make a mess of Brexit, there’s a cliff coming [and] it seems she realises this already. That’s a concern for the wider UK. This is a white flag for the wider UK.

“[The Prime Minister] is trying to repair the hole on the titanic, but it’s her who created it by going for the hardest possible Brexit she can.

“Theresa May has been even more arrogant than Margaret Thatcher, and the people of Scotland now see her for what she really is.”
