South Korean police have opened an investigation into how a North Korean woman who defected in 2014 has ended up back in North Korea.

Lim Ji-hyeon appeared on several television programmes during her time in South Korea until April this year, AP reported.

According to Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Lim is believed to have travelled to China following her TV appearances. However on Sunday (July 16) she was seen in a North Korean propaganda video.

In the video she says her name is Jon Hye Song and explains that she is now living with her parents after an awful time in South Korea.

Lim claims she was told to disparage North Korea on television in the South and there was "only physical, psychological pain" in a society controlled by money.

An official has said that police aim to discover whether she went to the country of her own will or was forcibly taken there from China.

It is common for North Korean propaganda to feature previous defectors.

Seoul’s Unification Ministry claims 25 defectors have gone back to the north since 2012, but five escaped again to live in the South.
