Donald Trump has confirmed that the man who fired shots at a congressional baseball practice earlier today is dead.

The gunman has already been named by law enforcement officials as James T Hodgkinson, and various reports said he had been shot.

Five people were injured in the shooting in Virginia including Republican Steve Scalise, who is the whip for the Republican party in the House of Representatives. Scalise is also a key Trump ally and is known for his conservative political outlook.

Before shooting the group, Hodgkinson allegedly asked those nearby whether the practice was being held by Republicans or Democrats.

Hodgkinson was often vocal on social media about disliking President Trump, according to The Telegraph. Reports also say that he volunteered to help campaign for Bernie Sanders.

Charles Orear claims that he met the 66-year-old whilst on a campaign in Iowa. He told The Washington Post: “He was this union tradesman, pretty stocky, and we stayed up talking politics.

“He was more on the really progressive side of things.”
