Six members of an American family are presumed dead after being swept away by floodwater in Houston.

The Pasadena Independent School District said six members of the Saldiver family were caught in rising water as the city weathers the impact of Storm Harvey.

Great-grandparents Belia and Manuel Saldivar, as well as children Devy, Dominic, Xavier and Daisy, were trapped inside their van.

Only the kids' father, Manuel, managed to escape the vehicle, but despite his call for the family to leave it, the van was submerged in moments.

The family had been driving away in order to escape the rising floodwater and rainfall brought on by the tropical storm at the time.

The bodies of the six individuals have not yet been recovered.

Harvey made landfall as a category four hurricane, before weakening to a tropical storm.

It has resulted in the evacuation of more than 3,000 people in the affected areas across Texas.
