At least one stray dog was found to be eating an infant's corpse outside a hospital in India, witnesses claim.
Some onlookers even recorded the horrific incident on their phones at the Jeypore sub-divisional headquarter hospital in Koraput district, according to Reuters.
Some reports claimed only one dog was involved in the incident, however others claim there were several dogs involved. Authorities say they are not aware of the identity of the child.
Witnesses said that the corpse was near the ophthalmology department and the infant had been wrapped in a towel.
One claimed that they believed the infant must have been left there for three or four days after it was born.
Despite the attack being apparently witnessed by many people, no one stopped it from continuing but onlookers did alert authorities.
Sitanshu Satapathy, a sub-divisional medical officer, told The Hindustan Times: “After learning about the incident I personally rushed to the spot with my staff, but found nothing.
"Neither the dog nor the baby’s body could be located. We do not have any patient missing from our hospital."
Despite no apparent evidence being left at the scene, he said a police complaint will still be filed about the incident.
According to reports, police are now going through videos of the incident to find out what happened.
