A teenager is now in a critical condition after she was forced to have an abortion, following two alleged incidents of rape.

The girl was allegedly raped by two teachers during a three-month period in India.

The director of the school she attended and a teacher have now been arrested, according to the BBC.

Police are also investigating the private hospital where her abortion took place in the state of Rajasthan.

She was first taken to hospital due to having severe stomach pains and it was then that her pregnancy was discovered and an abortion was planned.

The police claim that the 18-year-old lost consciousness after having the procedure, which was allegedly forced upon her by her attackers.

BBC Hindi was told by doctors that the student had suffered brain damage. It is not yet clear what went wrong with the abortion, but the teenager's health deteriorated rapidly afterwards.

Protests over the incident have been held outside the school, and the authorities have suspended classes whilst the investigation continues.

A victim statement has not yet been taken by police and the teenager is currently still unconscious.

Police think that the pupil attended the school outside of regular hours using the pretext of extra lessons, but it was then that she was raped.
