A man has been jailed in the US for opening and licking a tub of ice cream before putting it back on the supermarket shelf as part of a social media joke.

D’Adrien Anderson, 24, was sentenced to 30 days in jail for the prank, which was part of a viral online trend of ice cream licking, according to NBC News.

Anderson filmed himself a Walmart store in Port Arthur, Texas, on August 26 and shared the footage online.

CCTV in the shop showed that the defendant later took the ice cream back out of the freezer and paid for it – he and his father later showed officers the receipt as proof that he had purchased the sweet treat.

However, the ice cream manufacturer Blue Bell Creameries said it was forced to replace all of the ice cream in the freezer as a precaution, costing them $1,565.

Anderson pleaded guilty to misdemeanour criminal mischief earlier this year.

On top of his immediate 30 day sentence, he was also given a six month sentence, suspended for two years.

Anderson was also handed 100 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay back the cost to the ice cream company as well as a $1,000 fine.

The District Attorney’s Office in Jefferson County warned that any similar pranks would be taken seriously, NBC reported.

According to the US broadcaster, a spokesperson said “Anderson's actions caused public concerns about the safety and quality of consumer products offered for public consumption, impacted Blue Bell consumer confidence and caused the company financial loss.

“This type of activity will not be tolerated."
