Theresa May has used Huawei leak ‘to show leadership’

Thursday, May 2, 2019

Former Tory MP Nick de Bois has claimed that the Prime Minister has used the leaking of information from the National Security Council to “show leadership”.

Gavin Williamson was sacked as defence secretary on Wednesday night, after Theresa May said she had “compelling evidence” that he had leaked the information to a newspaper.

The NSC had been discussing the possible security risks of allowing Chinese company Huawei to bid for contracts for the new 5G network in the UK.

Mr De Bois told talkRADIO’s Mike Graham: “We are not really talking about a security of the realm issue, we are talking about the 'inappropriate' conduct of the Secretary of State who is charged with leaking this information.

“I am a bit underwhelmed about the subject but I think Theresa May has taken it as an opportunity to show leadership.”

Mr Williamson has denied leaking the information.

Penny Mordaunt will take over his role, and prisons minister Rory Stewart will replace her as international development secretary.
