Two men who threatened a 97-year-old man and his 87-year-old partner with with pickaxes have pleaded guilty to burglary.

Joe Haide, 30, and Victor Oladipo, 18, both from Basildon, admitted one count at Basildon Crown Court yesterday (March 6) and are due to be sentenced on Wednesday, April 11.

At around 3.35pm on Friday, September 22, Haide and Oladipo forced entry into a property in Timberlog Lane and then threatened the couple inside.

Haide and Oladipo, who were carrying pick axes and had their faces covered, then searched their home before leaving with a bracelet and four necklaces.

Police reviewed nearby CCTV and found that Haide and Oladipo parked their vehicle on a neighbouring road and were seen acting suspiciously, even hiding in bushes outside the property.

They were both arrested the following month in Basildon and were charged.

Investigating officer Dc Nicholas May, of Basildon CID, said: “Haide and Oladipo targeted a vulnerable couple within our community, forced their way into their home and then threatened them with pick axes.

“The woman bravely put up a fight against the intruders, only to be pushed back.  Haide and Oladipo then searched through the couple’s bedroom and left with jewellery. Neither have shown any remorse for their actions or their victims.

“This was a horrific ordeal and both victims have shown great courage and bravery. I would like to thank them both personally for their assistance and support during our investigation.”
