Three Lions is on course to hit number one in the UK singles chart on Friday, confirms the Official Charts Company.
The song by Baddiel, Skinner and The Lightning Seeds was originally released for the Euros in 1996, and a new version came out for the 1998 World Cup in France.
With England’s progression to the semi-finals of the World Cup, streams and physical downloads of the song have increased significantly as the country basks in World Cup fever.
As of midnight on Wednesday the song was sitting in the number one spot with a 5,000 lead over Geroge Ezra’s Shotgun in number two.
George Ezra has urged fans to knock him off the top spot in order for Three Lions to get the number one spot on Friday.
The Officials Chart Company confirmed they expect streams, download and video views to increase in the build-up to England’s game with Croatia, and after the game if England come out victorious.
The Official Single’s Chart is announced during Scott Mills’ show on BBC Radio 1 on Friday from 4pm.
England play Croatia in the semi-finals of the World Cup on Wednesday evening at 7pm.
