The "vast majority" of Australians have been left stunned by the bitterness of the US election, according to a leading reporter.

Polling stations are opening up across America today for people to cast their votes for their next president.

The world's media has been heavily focused on this election, anxiously awaiting whether the next leader of the free world is to be Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. 

Charles Croucher, a political reporter for Nine News in Australia, said that the reaction in Australia has moved from amusement to horror as the campaign has dragged on.
