A court in Finland has named the main suspect in the Turku knife attack as Abderrahman Mechkah.

Two women were killed and eight others were injured in the incident on Friday (August 18), which is being treated as a terror attack by police, according to The Independent.

The 18-year-old suspect was shot by police after the attack and arrested, although he is now being treated in hospital.

The authorities have now requested that Mechkah continue to be held whilst preliminary investigations take place.

He also may have to appear in court through a video link from hospital as a hearing is to take place over his detention.

Four other Moroccan men have also been detained in relation to the attack, however the police have yet to pin down their alleged role in the incident.

An arrest warrant has also been issued for another Moroccan man internationally.

Police believe that the attack was conducted to deliberately target women, but no group has come forward to take responsibility.

Investigators are also looking into any links between this attack and the Barcelona terror attacks.
