Twitter users back Burundi girls arrested for defacing President's photo

Twitter users have showed their support for three schoolgirls arrested for defacing photos of Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza – by also doodling on his photo.

Red noses and swirly moustaches have been drawn on the east African leader and the images shared on social media with the hashtag #FreeOurGirls.

The girls were charged last week with insulting the head of state after doodling on his image in school textbooks.

The three schoolgirls were arrested on March 12, alongside three other girls and a 13-year-old boy, who was later released. 

Three of the girls were also released without charge. 

The three other girls, aged 15, 16 and 17, face up to five years in prison if found guilty.
