Residents in a town in northern France got a very big surprise after finding a female python in the street.

The snake was making her way down the street in plain view in Courchelettes, near to the town of Douai.

Firemen were called to the scene to deal with the snake, which was over two metres in length.

The men managed to capture the reptile, and turned her over to the Societe Protectrice Des Animaux (SPA).

After the python had been captured, she laid an egg overnight, which remains in the care of the SPA.

The snake will be examined to see if she contains a chip - mandatory by law in France.
