The new interim leader of Ukip prompted scorn and exasperation from Julia Hartley-Brewer this morning with his incendiary comments on Islam.
Gerard Batten said "a significant minority" of Muslims are murders and the Qu'ran itself encourages terrorism, while Julia branded his comments "absurd."
Batten, who has taken over the leadership of Ukip on a temporary basis after Henry Bolton was sacked over the weekend, had previously described Islam as a "death cult" and he reiterated his view on talkRADIO, saying that Islam is "not just a religion, it's a way of life."
According to Batten, the Islamic holy text "says 'kill infidels wherever you find them'" and this, in his view, leads to large numbers of Muslims joining groups such as al-Qaeda and Islamic State.
Julia hit back at Batten's comments, pointing out that not every Catholic is an IRA terrorist - but the interviewee stood by his views.
