A Ukip MEP has told talkRADIO Henry Bolton is 'betraying Brexit' after quitting his spokesman role in light of the revelations surrounding the party leader's girlfriend.
Bill Etheridge stepped down as Ukip's sport spokesman as Bolton attempted to deal with the fallout from a string of racist comments made online by his girlfriend Jo Marney, centring on Meghan Markle. Bolton has now split from Marney but says he wants to stay on as leader, and told us yesterday her racist comments were sent "in the heat of the moment."
Etheridge, an MEP for the West Midlands, told Julia Hartley-Brewer that his resignation from the Ukip frontbench was not a protest against Bolton or his girlfriend, but rather the way "he's handled or failed to handle" the crisis.
Etheridge added that Bolton is making the issue worse every single day, adding that he's "damaging the party almost irreperably every day he's there... he's a naive lightweight who doesn't know what he's doing."
Etheridge insisted there was still a role for Ukip, but said that as a result of Bolton's actions "the referendum is being betrayed" as he is not holding the Government to account.
