Ukip MEP Steven Woolfe provoked the fight which caused his serious injury earlier today, according to party colleague Neil Hamilton.

Speaking to talkRADIO, Hamilton also suggested the dispute was based on claims Woolfe 'flirted' with defection to the Conservative Party.

Woolfe is currently recovering in hospital after an altercation at a meeting of the party's MEPs. He has released a statement saying he is "feeling brighter, happier, and smiling as ever."

Hamilton, leader of the Ukip Welsh Assembly group, told Sam Delaney why he believes the fight took place.

"I've been told that a dispute broke out because it was reported yesterday that Steven Woolfe had flirted with joining the Tory party a few years ago because he was apparently impressed by Theresa May's sloganising at the Tory party conference about immigration," he explained.

"I was told that Steven provoked it.

"It doesn't have any wider significance, this is just two grown up men who should have known better. I doubt they'll be thrown out of the party."
