United Airlines faces a fresh bout of negative publicity after an emergency landing in Costa Rica.

The flight had to make an emergency landing on Monday (April 24), after one of the plane's engines reportedly overheated.

The engine overheated whilst the plane was flying over the ocean, forcing it to make an impromptu landing, according to Fox News.

Local reports said the Boeing 737-800 took off from Daniel Oduber International Airport in Costa Rica and landed again just two hours later.

A reporter has said that the flight destination was supposed to be Houston.

One passenger claimed that the plane almost crashed during the landing and another said it was the “most frightening thing I’ve ever experienced.”

The airline has not yet responded to the reports, however a fire supervisor in Costa Rica confirmed that the overheating took place.
