The US Coast Guard were put on alert this morning after receiving a 'dirty bomb' threat against a port in South Carolina.

The threat was related to a container ship owned by Danish conglomerate The Maersk Line Company.

The ship was completing a journey to Charleston from New York when the Coast Guard received the warning that an explosive had been placed on the ship.

Once the vessel made port, the authorities descended and evacuated all of the personnel.

In a statement, the company said it had fully cooperated with them to ensure safety.
