US Navy plane believed to have crashed in Tennessee

A plane registered to the US Navy is believed to have crashed in Tennessee after going missing on Sunday. 

The plane was a T-45 jet, which is used to train Navy students, took off from a landing strip in Mississippi with two people on board. 

The alarm was raised after it did not return to the base later in the afternoon. 

Officials from the Monroe Country Sheriff's Office say the jet crashed into Cherokee National Forest, in southeastern Tennessee.

The Navy confirmed it was investigating reports of a plane crash on Twitter. 

The status of the instructor and student is unknown, but they are not believed to have survived the crash.
