American singer Ciara has come under fire after sharing a clip which could suggest women need to get married to "level up."

She posted a video on Instagram showing Pastor John Gray giving a sermon in 2016 and captioned it "#LevelUp. Don’t Settle."

Gray discusses ways that women can find a man to marry in the video, but his sermon also went on to say how men can find a wife, Inquisitr said.

The video itself also features text which says: "Too many women want to be married but you're walking in the spirit of 'girlfriend'."

Viewers have claimed the singer is "shaming single women" and the message the post gives is "toxic."

One user posted on Twitter: "Your value does not depend on a man wanting you and marriage is not the be all and end all. ciara is basic af for spreading this."

Another claimed "she’s using her marital status as a weapon against women who are not married. And it’s clear that she’s tied her value and sense of self worth to her marriage, otherwise she wouldn’t have shared that."

Others also suggested men are told what to do far less than women, one user said: "we are always telling women to 'act like a wife' but who is telling men to 'act like a husband?'."

The singer has now responded by uploading another image to Instagram.
