A Virgin Atlantic service sustained damage after another plane clipped it on the runway earlier in the week.

The VS4 flight from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York to Heathrow was canceled after part of the left wing was broken off by EgyptAir Flight 986.

The latter plane had been taking off, due to travel from the United States to Cairo.

Photos on social media showed the broken metal wingtip being loaded onto a truck to be delivered back to the terminal.

Both planes returned to their departure gates in the wake of the incident.

A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic confirmed the situation and said the passengers were being offered alternative travel arrangements.

The Federal Aviation Authority has opened an investigation into the incident.
