An executive from Volkswagen's Tokyo office has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of using drugs.

The car firm said that Thomas Siebert was detained on Wednesday (June 14). They didn’t specify which drug Siebert is suspected of taking, but local media reports cited by The Local claim it is cocaine.

Reports also say Siebert admitted to using cocaine and his urine tested positive for the drug.

A statement from Volkswagen Group Japan KK read: "We deeply regret the fact that an employee of our company has been taken into police custody for a personal matter.

"We will fully cooperate during the investigation and take the necessary steps, as soon as the facts have been clarified."

Siebert, who is German, has been working for the Japanese section of Volkswagen for seven years.

Reports claim police opened an investigation into the executive after customs officers believed an illegal drug had been posted to his address in Tokyo.

Police have not yet confirmed that the arrest took place.
