Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia, is to launch an online news publication which will fight against the spread of fake news.

The outlet is to be called Wikitribune, and it will pair professional journalists with voluntary contributors.

In order for an article to be published on the site, sources and interview transcripts must be provided.

Funds for the publication will be crowdsourced, and it is due to launch at the beginning of the upcoming UK general election campaign.

In an interview with The Guardian, Wales revealed the motivation for it came from the US.

The American entrepreneur said he was spurred into action after Donald Trump's advisor, Kellyanne Conway, used the line 'alternative facts' to defend a claim made by White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer about the number of people who attended the January inauguration.
