A woman filmed opening a tub of ice cream and licking it before putting it back in a store's freezer is facing up to 20 years in jail.

The viral video has been viewed more than 11 million times, and is believed to have been filmed in a branch of Walmart in Lufkin, Texas.

Lufkin Police want the woman in the video to face a second-degree felony charge for tampering with a consumer product, which carries a prison term of between two and 20 years and up to £8,000 in fines.

In the footage, the female suspect - dubbed the 'Lufkin licker' - appears to be egged on by a person behind the camera, who says "lick it, lick it".

In a statement, Lufkin Police said: "Our detectives are working to confirm the identity of the female suspect seen in a viral video of her licking a half-gallon of Blue Bell 'Tin Roof' ice cream in a Lufkin Walmart store around 11pm, June 28.

"Once her identity is verified, detectives will proceed with getting a warrant for her arrest on a charge of second-degree felony tampering with a consumer product.

"As that portion of the investigation continues, detectives are focusing on identifying the male (in the green shirt) behind the camera seen in images of the two entering the store together."
