A "woman in purple" is now thought to be the British police's prime suspect in the investigation of Madeleine McCann's disappearance.

A witness claims to have seen the woman standing outside the apartments in Praia da Luz, Portugal at the same time that the child vanished, according to the Daily Record.

Jenny Murat said the woman was intently watching the Ocean Club resort apartments. She said: “It struck me as strange. It’s so usual for anyone, particularly a woman, to be standing alone on the street in our resort, just watching a building.”

After hearing that Madeleine was missing, she went to the police with the information. Her son was also a suspect in the investigation, however he was cleared in 2008.

A police insider has now said they are ready to move in on the so-called woman in purple, and claims this is a significant line of inquiry.

However they also revealed that the woman is not currently living in Portugal.

Sources linked to the investigation have also claimed that the woman was connected with someone who worked at the resort where the McCann family was staying.

Murat also said that police in Portugal never interviewed her about the woman in purple, and she supposed they had other leads to follow.
