Zac Goldsmith's resignation is all about restoring his reputation, according to The Guardian's London commentator.
The government backed plans to build a new third runway at Heathrow yesterday, prompting Goldsmith to resign as a Conservative MP.
Dave Hill told Julia Hartley-Brewer that Goldsmith, who ran unsuccessfully for London mayor earlier this year, wanted to seem a man of principle after that defeat, which was accompanied by severe criticism.
Hill said: "There's a lot riding on this for him in terms of how he's seen by other people."
