Footage has emerged on social media of military representatives reading the morning news after taking control of the country's state broadcaster.
The clip shows two people in military uniform speaking on ZBC, with the broadcaster's logo clearly displayed in the background. One of the soldiers, who has been identified by news agency Getty as Major General Subisiso Moyo, is seen reading from a pre-prepared speech.
Moyo assures viewers that "comrade RG Mugabe" is safe and his family's security "is guaranteed."
However the general adds that individuals around the President will be targeted, as the military clamps down on "crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country."
"As soon as we have achieved our mission," Moyo says, "we expect that the situation will return to normalcy."
Many have described the military's takeover of Zimbabwe's key institutions as a coup, although army leaders deny this.
