A zoo caretaker has been mauled to death by white tiger cubs at a zoo in India, just a week after starting the job.

The man, identified as Anjeneya, was killed on Sunday (October 8) in Bannerghatta Biological Park, according to WFTV.

It is not yet clear why the man was in the enclosure as some reports suggest Anjeneya was feeding the tigers, whereas others claim he was locking the enclosure for the night.

Reports claim one of the latches on a gate used to keep the tigers back had not been closed and it was this that allowed the cubs, which are only 18 years old, to attack.

A preliminary investigation suggests that it is likely that it was Anjeneya who did not shut the gate properly.

Following the caretaker's death, other members of staff conducted a strike calling for increased wages as well as compensation for the man's son.

Staff also claim he had only been working at the zoo for a week and his job was to help keep the park clean.
